Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB Support Ends October 14. Is Your Fleet Ready?

Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB Support Ends October 14. Is Your Fleet Ready?

The version of Windows 10 running on many ATMs, interactive teller machines, and cash recyclers will stop receiving Microsoft support next month. Here's what's happening and how to prepare.

If your ATMs, interactive teller machines, or cash recyclers are between seven and ten years old, some of them may be running Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB. Extended Microsoft support for this version ends permanently on October 14. That means that the equipment will continue to perform as it does today, but after this deadline, newly discovered vulnerabilities will go unpatched on machines that handle cash and cardholder data. The exposure begins as a cybersecurity concern, surfaces as a compliance question at the next examination, and over time becomes a serviceability issue that puts uptime at risk.

Upgrade, refresh, or replace?

Every affected machine lands on one of three paths, and the right one depends on more than the upfront cost. A complete comparison accounts for PC core replacement, technician visits, application testing, downtime, extended maintenance, parts availability, warranty coverage, cybersecurity exposure, and remaining useful life.

Upgrading often extends the value of a strong-performing machine, while investing in aging hardware often delays a larger replacement cost without avoiding it. DBSI builds this analysis for each machine, so the decision rests on total cost of ownership rather than urgency.

The transition becomes much more manageable with a clear picture of your fleet. An early conversation with a partner who knows the equipment can turn an open-ended concern into a defined list of affected machines and viable options. From there, the deadline becomes a fleet-wide decision rather than a series of machine-by-machine emergencies, and an opportunity to prioritize long-overdue improvements.

DBSI’s in-house equipment experts have guided financial institutions through each step, and our approach works whether the fleet is twelve machines or two hundred.

Why the hardware matters

The obvious fix is an upgrade to Windows 11, and for newer machines that is exactly what happens. The complication is that a machine old enough to be running the 2016 version is often too old to qualify.

Windows 11 requires a TPM 2.0 security chip and a compatible processor, and many ATMs deployed before 2019 have neither. For those units, the path forward runs through new hardware, either a replacement PC core, the computer inside the machine, or a new unit altogether. That shifts the project from a software update into a matter of budget, procurement, testing, scheduling, and field execution.

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, supported through January 14, 2032, offers a longer runway for fixed-purpose devices with healthy hardware, though for aging machines it postpones the decision rather than settling it.

The compliance picture

No regulator has issued a Windows 10 mandate, but unsupported software on systems that handle cardholder data draws a finding under PCI DSS without a documented remediation plan, and FFIEC guidance on information security and business continuity gives examiners clear ground to ask for one.

Unsupported platforms also tend to bring vendor support gaps and uptime risk alongside the cyber exposure. A machine that still works and a machine that is secure, supportable, and defensible are two different things, and a cost, dated roadmap answers the question before it is asked.

Making the most of the transition

If you are reading this and realizing your fleet may not be ready, you are in a better position than it might feel. With the budget conversation already open, this is also the moment to look at device performance, cash automation, branch traffic patterns, security controls, remote management, and long-term serviceability across your fleet, including kiosks and digital signage players that often sit outside the usual refresh cycle.

A self-service fleet planned around those questions carries fewer maintenance issues, simplifies future deployments, and delivers the reliable experience customers expect. Instead of a rushed expense, this transition can become the starting point for a well-planned modernization.

Know where your fleet stands

Getting prepared starts with a conversation, and it does not require an inventory, a budget, or a decision in hand. The DBSI team can talk through where your fleet stands today and what the deadline means for your equipment specifically, then help shape an achievable path forward that IT, operations, compliance, finance, and branch leadership can all work from.
