When you’re planning a branch transformation, it’s easy to focus on the flash—self-service stations, touchscreens, and digital signage. But tech alone won’t create the meaningful client experience you’re aiming for. Without intentional design, the tech quickly becomes an afterthought instead of an advantage.
At Visionary Voices 2025, DBSI’s Architectural Coordinator, Maryn Wilson, and I shared what really happens behind the scenes of a successful transformation. In my 15+ years at DBSI, I’ve seen time and time again that smart planning and purposeful design make all the difference.
Maryn, our go-to expert in millwork and equipment integration, puts it best: she ensures the tech you invest in doesn’t just look good—it functions exactly the way it was intended to.
Start With Strategy
Before we ever touch design, we start with your goals. Through our in-depth discovery process, we uncover:
- What experience are we trying to deliver?
- What technology will support that experience?
- Where should that technology live within the branch?
To answer those questions, we use a comprehensive equipment list that includes everything from cash recyclers and digital signage to break room appliances.
As Maryn explained in our live Visionary Voices 2025 presentation,
"Everything that would be built into something needs to have a place, to have a home.”
Function First, Always
Design is more than aesthetics, it’s about how your space functions every day. Teller towers, for example, need to accommodate everything from TCRs to dual monitors to signature pads without feeling cluttered or confusing.
These custom teller stations at Copper State Credit Union’s Goodyear branch offer accessibility, digital signage integration, and modern design.

Design the In-Between
Not every interaction requires a teller or a private office. That’s where service spots come in—flexible zones that offer the right blend of visibility, privacy, and convenience.
As Maryn described, “It is a tailored experience.”
These spots help you pull clients off the queue, start advisory conversations, or handle quick transactions—all without forcing someone into a space that doesn’t match the moment or the service they need.

These flexible spaces at SF Fire Credit Union’s Stonestown branch support everything from advisory conversations to quick service.
Where Design Meets Strategy
Your branch isn’t just a place—it’s an experience. When strategy, design, and technology come together, the result is an optimized space that works for your staff, your brand, and most importantly, your clients.
At DBSI, we don’t believe in tech for tech’s sake. We believe in purposeful design—creating high-performing environments built for the future of banking.
